Exercising in Hot Weather:
How to Stay Cool, Safe and Still Make Progress
When the temperatures rise, one of the most common questions I get asked as a Personal Trainer is:
"Should I still exercise when it's this hot?"
The answer is usually yes...
But with a few important considerations.
At RL Fitness in Redditch, we've continued training through this recent spell of warm weather, but we've also adapted sessions to ensure people remain safe, comfortable and able to enjoy their workouts.
Because fitness shouldn't be about suffering through conditions that leave you feeling drained and exhausted.
It's about training smart.
Let's look at why exercising in hot weather feels harder, what happens to your body when temperatures rise, and my top tips for staying cool whilst continuing to make progress.

Why Does Exercise Feel Harder in Hot Weather?
Have you ever noticed that a workout which normally feels manageable suddenly feels much harder during a heatwave?
That's because your body is working overtime.
When you exercise, your muscles generate heat.
Normally, your body cools itself by increasing blood flow to the skin and producing sweat.
As sweat evaporates, it helps lower your body temperature.
But when the weather is particularly hot or humid, this cooling system becomes less effective.
Your body has to work harder to regulate temperature whilst also supporting your exercise performance.
This can result in:
- Increased heart rate
- Higher perceived effort
- Greater fluid loss through sweat
- Reduced exercise performance
- Feeling fatigued sooner
This is completely normal.
It doesn't mean you're suddenly less fit.
It simply means your body is dealing with additional stress.
Is It Safe to Exercise During Hot Weather?
For most healthy individuals, exercise during warm weather can still be perfectly safe.
However, it is important to respect the conditions.
According to guidance from organisations such as the NHS and UK Health Security Agency, heat-related illness can develop when the body struggles to regulate temperature effectively.
Signs that you should stop exercising and seek shade, fluids or medical advice include:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Headache
- Excessive fatigue
- Confusion
- Feeling faint
The goal isn't to prove how tough you are.
The goal is to train consistently and safely.
Sometimes that means adjusting your session rather than pushing through.
The Biggest Mistake People Make
One of the biggest mistakes I see during hot weather is people trying to train exactly as they would on a cool spring morning.
The reality is:
Your body doesn't know it's following a programme.
It only knows the stress it's experiencing.
When temperatures increase, your body is already under more strain.
This is why intelligent training matters.
At RL Fitness, we've modified some of our sessions during the hotter weather.
We've incorporated:
✔ Additional recovery periods
✔ Longer water breaks
✔ Adjustments to exercise intensity where needed
✔ Coaching people to listen to their bodies
Because sometimes the smartest thing you can do is slightly reduce intensity and maintain consistency.

My Top Tips for Exercising Safely in Hot Weather
1. Hydrate Before You Feel Thirsty
Many people wait until they feel thirsty before drinking.
By that point, you're often already mildly dehydrated.
Try to:
- Drink regularly throughout the day
- Start your session well hydrated
- Continue sipping during exercise
Hydration plays a vital role in helping your body regulate temperature effectively.
2. Wear Light, Breathable Clothing
Choose lightweight clothing that allows sweat to evaporate efficiently.
Dark colours and heavy fabrics can trap heat and make sessions feel significantly harder.
Comfort matters more than fashion during a heatwave.
3. Accept That Your Performance May Feel Different
This is a big one.
Your pace may be slower.
You may need longer rests.
You may not lift quite as much as normal.
And that's okay.
Fitness isn't built from one workout.
It's built from showing up consistently over time.
4. Focus on Effort, Not Numbers
Instead of chasing personal bests during a heatwave, focus on how you feel.
Ask yourself:
- Am I moving well?
- Am I maintaining good technique?
- Am I listening to my body?
Those are far better measures of success during hotter conditions.
5. Prioritise Recovery Afterwards
Once you've finished exercising:
✔ Continue drinking fluids
✔ Refuel appropriately
✔ Allow your body time to cool down
✔ Avoid rushing straight into strenuous activities
Recovery becomes even more important when temperatures are high.
Why Staying Active Matters During Summer
When hot weather arrives, it's tempting to stop exercising altogether.
But movement remains incredibly important.
Regular exercise can help:
- Maintain fitness levels
- Support mental wellbeing
- Improve energy levels
- Maintain muscle mass
- Support long-term health
The key is adapting, not stopping.
A modified workout is always more beneficial than no workout at all.

How We Approach Hot Weather at RL Fitness
One thing I never want people to feel is that they have to choose between their health and their comfort.
That's why during warmer periods we focus on creating an environment where people can still train effectively whilst staying as comfortable as possible.
You'll often find:
✔ Plenty of opportunities to hydrate
✔ Cool towels available to help freshen up
✔ Thoughtful modifications when temperatures rise
✔ A supportive atmosphere where listening to your body is encouraged
And if you've trained with us recently, you may have noticed we're always looking for little ways to make sessions that bit more enjoyable too.
Let's just say I may have a few surprises up my sleeve when the temperatures climb... 👀
The Bottom Line
Exercising in hot weather doesn't have to mean struggling through every session.
By adjusting intensity, staying hydrated, listening to your body and focusing on consistency rather than perfection, you can continue making progress all summer long.
Remember:
Fitness isn't about pushing through at all costs.
It's about doing what your body needs, when it needs it.
And sometimes, that means taking an extra drink break, slowing things down slightly and appreciating that looking after yourself is part of the process too.
