Summer Step Special at RL Fitness
Summer Step Special at RL Fitness: Fun, Fitness & Feel-Good Energy in Redditch

Good music. Plenty of movement. Lots of laughs. And a room full of people having fun while getting a brilliant workout.
That's probably the best way I can describe our latest Summer Step Special at RL Fitness in Redditch.
If you've followed RL Fitness for a while, you'll know that I love finding different ways to get people moving. Yes, exercise should challenge us. Yes, we want to become fitter and stronger.
But I also firmly believe that fitness should be something we can enjoy.
And our Summer Step Special was a pretty good reminder of exactly that!
After the success of our Spring Into Summer Step sessions earlier in the year, I knew Step needed to make another appearance. So, with summer well and truly here, we turned the music up and brought it back for another high-energy special.
And what a session it was. ☀️🎶

What Is an RL Fitness Step Special?
If you've never tried a Step class before, the basic concept is wonderfully simple.
Using an exercise step, we combine a variety of movements and easy-to-follow sequences to create a fun cardiovascular workout.
But don't worry – you don't need to be a dancer and you definitely don't need to know a complicated routine before you arrive!
My Step Specials are deliberately designed to be accessible and enjoyable.
We build movements gradually, practise different combinations and then start putting them together with the music.
And, yes, occasionally somebody goes left while everybody else goes right!
That's part of the fun.
There's no judgement and absolutely no expectation of perfection.
The aim is simply to move your body, challenge yourself and have a good time doing it.
Why Step Is Such a Great Workout
There's a reason Step has remained popular in the fitness world for so long.
It can provide a fantastic cardiovascular workout, while the repeated stepping movements also challenge the muscles of the lower body.
During a Step class, you'll typically be working muscles including your:
- Glutes
- Quadriceps
- Hamstrings
- Calves
- Core
Because you're repeatedly stepping up and down while moving in different directions, Step can also challenge coordination, balance and movement skills.
And intensity doesn't have to be the same for everyone.
Changing the step height, pace, range of movement or impact gives us plenty of ways to adapt the workout.
That's something that's really important to me as a coach.
You don't have to keep up with anybody else.
You work at the level that's right for you.
"But I've Never Done Step Before..."
Then you're exactly the sort of person who can come along.
One of the things people often worry about before trying a new fitness class is:
"What if everybody else knows what they're doing and I don't?"
Here's the secret...
We've all gone the wrong way in a Step class.
Including the instructor!
Our routines are designed to be easy to follow and we build them progressively rather than expecting everyone to magically know what's coming next.
You might not get every movement first time.
Who cares?
Keep moving, have a laugh and jump back in when you're ready.
I'd much rather see someone laughing because they've gone completely the wrong direction than becoming frustrated because they think exercise has to be perfect.
It doesn't.

The Music Makes It
There's something about exercising to a great playlist that completely changes the atmosphere.
And the music was definitely one of the things people loved about our Summer Step Special.
Great tunes.
High energy.
Plenty of smiles.
And that brilliant moment when the movement and the music all come together.
Members told me afterwards how much they'd enjoyed the music, the energy and the easy-to-follow routines, which is exactly what I wanted the session to feel like.
Not an intimidating fitness class.
A feel-good workout.
There's a difference.
The Bit I Love Most? The Atmosphere
The workout is only half of what makes these sessions special.
The other half is the people.
There were laughs when feet didn't quite cooperate.
Encouragement when things got tougher.
Smiles when someone finally nailed a sequence they'd been concentrating on.
And that slightly sweaty but very happy feeling when everyone finished!
It's exactly the kind of atmosphere I've wanted to create at RL Fitness.
No egos. No judgement. No worrying about whether you're the fittest person in the room.
Just people moving together and supporting one another.
That community element is one of the things I'm most proud of as RL Fitness continues to grow.
Exercise Doesn't Always Have to Feel Serious
This is something I think we sometimes forget.
There's absolutely a place for structured strength training, progressive overload, cardiovascular fitness and carefully planned programmes.
I use all of those things in my coaching.
But sometimes...
It's okay to exercise simply because it's fun.
In fact, finding forms of movement you genuinely enjoy can make being active much easier to maintain.
If every workout feels like something you have to endure, it's hardly surprising when motivation disappears.
But put on a great tune, get some lovely people together and turn exercise into something you actually look forward to?
Now we're talking.
You Don't Have to Be an RL Fitness Member
This is something I really want more people locally to know.
Our Step Specials aren't just for existing RL Fitness members.
They're open to members and non-members, and you can simply pay as you go for the individual session.
That makes them a lovely way to experience RL Fitness without committing to a membership or package.
Maybe you've been following the RL Fitness page for months but haven't quite felt ready to come through the door.
Maybe you used to love Step and fancy doing it again.
Perhaps you've never tried it and just think it looks like fun.
Or maybe you'd like to come along with a friend.
You're welcome.
These special sessions are deliberately designed to bring people together.
Missed This One? Step Will Be Back!
And here's the good news...
Our next RL Fitness Step Special is planned for October. 🎃🍂
We aim to bring our Step Specials back every couple of months, each time with a slightly different theme and plenty of that familiar RL Fitness energy.
Spaces are kept limited, so keep an eye on our social media pages and the RL Fitness website for the next announcement and booking details.
Members and non-members will once again be welcome.
And yes...
I'll start working on the playlist. 🎶😉

More Than Just a Fitness Class
When I opened RL Fitness in Redditch, I didn't want to create somewhere people simply came, exercised and went home.
I wanted to create a fitness community.
Somewhere people know your name.
Somewhere beginners feel comfortable.
Somewhere exercises can be adapted rather than people being made to feel they "can't do it."
Somewhere we work hard – but we're allowed to laugh while we're doing it.
Our Summer Step Special captured all of that.
For one session, nobody was thinking about calories, numbers on the scales or what their body looked like.
We were simply moving.
Together.
And having a brilliant time doing it.
That's fitness too.
