Why Am I Doing Everything Right and Still Not Losing Weight?

8 Reasons Women Struggle to See Results (And What Actually Helps)
Have you ever found yourself saying...
"I'm eating well."
"I'm exercising."
"I'm drinking more water."
"So why aren't I losing weight?"
If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something before we go any further...
You're not failing.
In fact, this is one of the most common conversations I have as a Personal Trainer and Women's Health Coach here at RL Fitness in Redditch.
Many of the women I work with arrive feeling frustrated.
They're trying.
They're making healthier choices.
They're exercising more consistently.
Yet the scales don't seem to reflect all of that hard work.
So what gives?
The truth is, weight loss is influenced by far more than simply eating less and exercising more.
Let's explore some of the biggest reasons why your progress may have slowed—and more importantly, what you can do about it.

1. You're Measuring Success by the Scales Alone
Let's start with one of the biggest misconceptions.
The scales only measure one thing:
Your total body weight.
They don't tell you:
• How much muscle you've built
• How much body fat you've lost
• Whether you're retaining water
• Whether you're due your menstrual cycle
• Whether you've had a salty meal the night before
Body weight naturally fluctuates from day to day.
Research suggests these fluctuations can easily be 1–3kg depending on hydration, glycogen stores, sodium intake, digestive contents and hormonal changes.
This is completely normal.
If you're becoming stronger...
Sleeping better...
Feeling more confident...
Clothes are fitting differently...
Those are all signs of progress too.

2. Hidden Calories Add Up More Than You Think
One of the biggest reasons progress stalls isn't because people are eating "bad" foods.
It's because little things add up.
A splash of milk here.
A handful of crisps there.
Finishing the children's leftovers.
An extra spoonful while cooking.
The weekend takeaway.
None of these are "wrong".
But together they can create what coaches often call calorie creep.
The important thing isn't perfection.
It's awareness.
Sometimes small adjustments create the biggest changes.

3. Stress Could Be Working Against You
This is something we don't talk about enough.
When life feels busy, your body doesn't simply respond to food and exercise.
It also responds to stress.
Chronic stress can affect:
• Food choices
• Hunger and fullness signals
• Sleep quality
• Recovery
• Motivation to move
Stress doesn't stop fat loss completely, but it can make maintaining healthy habits much harder.
That's why at RL Fitness we don't just focus on workouts.
We look at the bigger picture.

4. Sleep Matters More Than Most People Realise
Have you ever noticed how much hungrier you feel after a poor night's sleep?
There's science behind that.
Research has shown that inadequate sleep can influence hormones involved in appetite regulation, including ghrelin (which stimulates hunger) and leptin (which helps you feel full).
Poor sleep can also leave you feeling less energised, making it harder to stay active throughout the day.
One difficult night won't undo your progress.
But consistently poor sleep can make healthy choices feel much harder.
It's one of the reasons I often talk about the importance of recovery—not just training.
5. Hormones Can Influence Weight Loss
For women, hormones can play a significant role.
During perimenopause and menopause, declining oestrogen levels are associated with changes in:
• Fat distribution
• Muscle mass
• Energy levels
• Sleep
• Recovery
Many women notice they begin carrying more weight around the abdomen.
This doesn't mean weight loss is impossible.
It simply means the approach often needs to change.
Rather than eating less and exercising more...
We focus on building muscle, managing stress, prioritising sleep and creating sustainable habits.
As someone currently navigating my own perimenopause journey, I understand how frustrating these changes can feel.
But I also know that with the right approach, you can still make fantastic progress.
6. Too Much Cardio, Not Enough Strength Training
For years women have been told:
"If you want to lose weight, do more cardio."
While cardiovascular exercise has many health benefits, it isn't the whole picture.
Strength training offers incredible benefits including:
✔ Building lean muscle
✔ Supporting metabolism
✔ Improving bone health
✔ Increasing confidence
✔ Helping maintain muscle mass during weight loss
As we get older, preserving muscle becomes increasingly important.
That's why strength training forms such a big part of what we do at RL Fitness.
It's not about becoming bulky.
It's about becoming stronger, healthier and more resilient.
7. You're Expecting Perfection Instead of Consistency
Here's something I tell my members regularly:
One takeaway won't ruin your progress.
One missed workout won't ruin your progress.
One holiday won't ruin your progress.
What usually causes people to lose momentum is believing they've "failed" and giving up altogether.
Real progress comes from consistency.
Not perfection.
The women who achieve long-term success aren't perfect.
They're simply the ones who keep coming back.
8. Your Body Is Already Changing—You Just Can't See It Yet
This is perhaps the hardest part.
Real change often happens beneath the surface first.
You're becoming stronger.
Your heart is getting fitter.
Your muscles are adapting.
Your confidence is growing.
Your habits are improving.
Many of these changes happen long before dramatic visual changes appear.
Think of it like building a house.
You don't start with the roof.
You build the foundations first.
And that's exactly what you're doing every time you choose to move your body.
So... What Should You Focus On Instead?
Instead of asking:
"Why haven't I lost weight this week?"
Try asking yourself:
✔ Am I stronger than last month?
✔ Am I moving more?
✔ Am I sleeping better?
✔ Do I have more energy?
✔ Am I making healthier choices more consistently?
Because those are the habits that create lasting results.
Weight loss is often a by-product of improving your health—not the only measure of success.

My Advice as a Coach
If there's one thing I'd love every woman reading this to take away, it's this:
Please don't let the scales decide your worth.
Your body is doing so much more than simply trying to lose weight.
It's adapting.
Learning.
Growing stronger.
Looking after you every single day.
Treat it with kindness.
Fuel it well.
Move it regularly.
Celebrate the small wins.
Because those small wins become life-changing results over time.
