Why Choosing the Right Fitness Coach Matters More Than Choosing the Right Workout

When most people decide they want to get fitter, healthier or stronger, they usually start by searching for the "best workout."

Should I do HIIT?

Should I lift weights?

Should I join a gym?

Should I run?

They're all good questions.

But after spending the last 10 years helping people transform their health and confidence, I've come to realise something...

The workout isn't usually what determines success.

The coach does.

Or more specifically...

The relationship you build with your coach.

Because the best programme in the world won't help if you don't feel confident enough to walk through the door.

It's Never Just About Exercise

Since opening RL Fitness in Redditch earlier this year, I've been incredibly grateful for the wonderful reviews people have taken the time to leave.

Of course, hearing people say they enjoy the sessions is lovely.

But what means even more to me is why they're enjoying them.

When I read through the reviews, I noticed something interesting.

Very few people talked about calories.

Very few talked about losing weight.

Instead...

They talked about feeling supported.

Feeling understood.

Feeling stronger.

Feeling more confident.

Feeling like they belonged.

And to me, that's what great coaching is all about.

1. A Great Coach Listens Before They Coach

Everyone walks through the door with a different story.

Some people are recovering from injuries.

Some are returning after years away from exercise.

Some are navigating pregnancy.

Others are managing perimenopause or menopause.

Some simply want to feel like themselves again.

No two journeys are the same.

One of my lovely members, Tracey, summed this up perfectly.

"Training with someone who truly understands is priceless."

Tracey joined RL Fitness wanting to regain her confidence while managing injuries and perimenopause.

Today she's building strength, sleeping better and feeling much more like herself again.

That's not because of one magical exercise.

It's because coaching starts with listening.

2. The Best Coaches Adapt To You

One thing I firmly believe is this:

People shouldn't have to fit the programme.

The programme should fit the person.

Some days you're full of energy.

Other days life has been exhausting.

Good coaching recognises that.

Melanie captured this beautifully in her review.

She talked about how sessions are adapted when she's feeling out of sorts, but also how I know when to encourage her to push herself that little bit further.

That balance matters.

Because coaching isn't about making every session harder.

It's about making every session right for you.

3. Knowledge Matters—But So Does Explaining It Well

Exercise shouldn't feel confusing.

One of the biggest compliments I receive is when people say they finally understand why they're doing something.

Leanne highlighted this perfectly.

She spoke about exercises being explained clearly, adapted to her ability and helping her become stronger and more confident with every session.

Knowledge is important.

But sharing that knowledge in a way that helps people feel capable is even more important.

4. A Great Fitness Environment Should Never Feel Intimidating

Let's be honest.

Walking into a gym can feel overwhelming.

It's something I hear all the time.

People worry they'll be judged.

That they won't be fit enough.

That everyone will be watching them.

That's why creating a welcoming environment has always been one of my biggest priorities.

Mandy described RL Fitness perfectly.

"Everyone is friendly. No egos."

Those four words probably mean more to me than almost any compliment I could receive.

Because if people feel comfortable, they're much more likely to keep coming back.

And consistency changes lives.

5. Progress Looks Different For Everyone

Not everyone joins RL Fitness with the same goal.

Some want to lose weight.

Some want to build strength.

Some want more energy.

Some simply want to feel healthier.

Dave's review really stood out to me.

At 59, his goal wasn't chasing perfection.

He wanted to become the fittest he'd felt since his twenties.

That's inspiring.

Because fitness has no age limit.

It's never too late to become stronger than you were yesterday.

6. Coaching Is About People, Not Numbers

One thing you'll never hear me say is:

"You need to look like this."

Because real success isn't measured by one number on the scales.

It's measured by things like:

Sleeping through the night.

Feeling confident again.

Walking upstairs without getting out of breath.

Playing with grandchildren.

Feeling happier.

Feeling stronger.

Looking forward to exercise instead of dreading it.

That's exactly what Andrea's review reflects.

"Everyone gets the coaching that's relevant to them, whether you're a beginner or more experienced."

That's because nobody gets treated like just another person in a class.

Everyone matters.

7. Fitness Should Be Enjoyable

This one is hugely important to me.

If you hate every workout...

You're unlikely to keep doing it.

Exercise shouldn't feel like punishment.

It should be something that adds to your life.

Jenson summed this up perfectly.

"Friendly and supportive, no judgement, just fun and enjoyable."

Honestly?

That sentence captures exactly what I wanted RL Fitness to become.

A place where people smile.

Work hard.

Laugh.

Support each other.

And leave feeling better than when they arrived.

8. These Reviews Mean More Than Five Stars

RL Fitness officially opened its doors in April.

So we're still very much at the beginning of this journey.

Every new member.

Every conversation.

Every session.

Every review.

They all mean an incredible amount to me.

Not because they're helping grow the business...

But because every review represents a real person who chose to believe in themselves.

Someone who took that first step despite feeling nervous.

Someone who trusted me to be part of their journey.

And that's something I'll never take for granted.

Looking Ahead

Over the coming months we'll continue to grow.

We'll introduce new workshops.

More Step Specials.

Community events.

Educational sessions.

New challenges.

But one thing will never change.

The people will always come first.

Because the best workout isn't the one that burns the most calories.

It's the one you enjoy enough to come back and do again.

And having the right coach beside you can make all the difference.

Looking for a Personal Trainer or Small Group Fitness Classes in Redditch?

Whether you're completely new to exercise, returning after a break, navigating perimenopause, recovering from injury or simply looking for a welcoming place to train, RL Fitness is here to support you.

You'll never be expected to "keep up."

You'll never be judged.

You'll simply be encouraged, supported and coached at your own pace.

If you're ready to take that first step, I'd love to welcome you to the RL Fitness community.

Because at RL Fitness, we're not just helping people get fitter.

We're helping people believe in themselves again.

Taking you further than you thought possible.
